An alarm clock rings, and you hit snooze? Welcome to retirement!

After years of the 9-5 grind, it is time to take advantage of some well-earned rest and relaxation. While many retirees do their best to stay active and involved there is no shame in finding a little bit of “you” time. However, too much free time may have even the most relaxed minds wondering what to do in retirement.

The Burial Advisor has a few important tips for making the most of your retirement:

  1. Volunteer: Giving back means more than just monetary donations to charity. Many retirees find that giving time to charitable organizations or events is quite rewarding. In addition to keeping your mind and heart busy, most organizations who work with retired volunteers allow you to set a schedule that works for you depending on how many hours you are interested in giving back.
  2. Stay Active:  Staying healthy is a key part of making the most of your retirement years! In addition to the long list of annual checkups, treatments and tests that we collect as we get older, daily exercise or fitness activity can help make sure you are keeping a healthy body and healthy mind. Join a group or community organization (such as the YMCA) for even more support!
  3. Organize your finances: Draft your will, refinance your credit cards or even set up an estate.  Since you no longer have the pressures of a full time job, and you may have a change of income, you now have the time to sort through finances and weigh all of your financial options. This is a great way to make sure you are doing what is best for you and your family in both the short and long term.
  4. Decide on aftercare planning: You can give your loved ones peace of mind by investing in pre-paid burial services. When the time comes, you don’t want to be a burden on family members and you may have certain preferences regarding how you wish you to be remembered or where you want to be buried. There are endless decisions and options – no one knows your preferences better than you.

If you are still struggling to figure out your free time and what to do when you retire the most important thing to remember is staying true to yourself. Some of us downsize when we retire, others look to make big bold moves – it is all up to you! Your retirement is a time to enjoy the friends and family you worked so hard to support over the years.
